A Virginia woman has been charged with reckless driving in the death of a 49 year old cyclist, nearly three months after the accident which occurred on August 25.
Jessica L. Chandler, a 22-year-old from Port Republic, Virginia was charged in the death of Joseph V. Mirenda, a 49-year-old from Virginia Beach. Mirenda was riding from Wintergreen to visit his son, a student at James Madison University when he was struck and killed. Mirenda died at the scene of the accident.

Virginia bicyclists scored a major win for the future of active transportation in the state. Virginia’s Commonwealth Transportation Board, the organization responsible for approving and funding transportation projects in Virginia, voted yesterday to prioritize federal transportation funds for “core transportation functions”. Bike and pedestrian projects are a major part of this focus.
The unanimous vote was important victory for VBF.
Transportation Enhancements are an important funding source for bike projects. States receive these funds as part of their federal highway allotment. Federal guidelines allow states to allocate these funds to twelve different categories of projects, including facilities for bicycles and pedestrians; and safety, landscaping, removal of outdoor signs, etc.

RABA volunteers assemble and distribute new bikes for needy children
Thanks to the charitable efforts of the Richmond Area Bicycling Association, over 150 needy children in central Virginia will be getting new bikes for Christmas, through RABA’s Bikes for Kids program.
RABA raised over $9000 to purchase 158 new bikes for local children. The club works with local Christmas mothers to distribute the bikes to kids in 7 different localities.

VBF joined bike advocates from all over the US for a weekend-long Winning Campaigns Training by The Alliance for Biking and Walking
Cyclists from across America met in Richmond Saturday for a weekend of advocacy training hosted by VBF and The Alliance for Biking and Walking (formerly Thunderhead Alliance). 26 champions from bike clubs, non-profits and government bodies spent the weekend planning campaigns to promote bicycling and walking in their home communities.
“As a new, state wide executive director, the Alliance training directed me to a specific target and goals,” said PA Bikes and Walks’ Michele Barrett, “To insure my successful campaign.”
Virginia’s state bike and pedestrian coordinator, Jakob Helmboldt, spent Saturday morning addressing the participants, explaining how they can most effectively work with government organizations in their localities to most effectively address bike and pedestrian issues.
The event, held on the campus of Virginia Commonwealth University’s, Medical College of Virginia, was hosted by VBF and the Richmond Area Bicycling Association, and funded through a generous grant from Planet Bike, SRAM, and Bikes Belong.
