The Bicyclist Safety Act has been signed by the governor, and will take effect July 1.

Warrior Ride in Norfolk & Chesapeake

Norfolk, Virginia — 30 of our Nation’s Heroes to take part in cycling event. Wounded Warriors will participate in a 3 day 55 mile bike ride that will begin on Naval Station Norfolk, 28 April 2011.This is not your typical bike ride; it is an adaptive cycling event. Several of the participants will have specially designed bicycles and three wheel recumbent bikes.

Thanks to the generosity of several businesses and individual donors there is no cost to the veterans to participate in the cycling event.

There will be a Community ride in Chesapeake on 29 April 2011. The community is welcome to join in on the 25 mile ride. There is a $25.00 registration fee and all of the money will help pay for future Warrior Rides. The ride will begin at Fat Frogs Bike and Fitness, 237 Hanbury Road E, Suite 13 Chesapeake, VA. Registration will begin at 7:30am.

The Warrior Rides are coordinated by a husband and wife team (Bob and Debra Racine) from Oak Island, NC. They held their first adaptive cycling event in 2005. They knew from that very first event that adaptive cycling presented itself as a tool for recreation and rehabilitation for wounded service members. Adapting bicycles to injuries can be challenging, but they make it work.

Bob Racine a Veteran himself and his wife Debra have dedicated their lives to wounded service members. They are the founders of the non-profit organization, THE WARRIOR RIDE. The Warrior Ride is a civilian organization with a 501(c)(3) non-profit status. It is not a government agency and is solely supported by the generosity of individuals, corporations, and foundations in support and appreciation of America’s wounded warriors. Without the generosity of the donors, the Warrior Rides would not be possible. To find out more about Warrior Rides visit www.thewarriorride.com

  • Merry Christmas! My husband Bob and I run the 501(3)c – The Warrior Ride. You featured us last year, and thanks! We are planning another event on March 27, beginning at 9am (Friday). Could you notify your membership of this event? The cost is $35/ includes a t-shirt, and is tax deductible. We are a 100% non-profit – no salaries, all money raised goes directly back to getting wounded warriors on 4 day (30 miles/per/day) bicycling events. You already know the benefits this produces. Many of our ww’s must define a new baseline for their lives, and cycling is a great accomplishment for someone with no legs, or 1 hand, a brain injury, or even PTSD. “If I can do this, I can do anything!” is frequently heard. We have hand cycles, many different styles of recumbents, and uprights. Whatever it takes – we get them pedaling. All expenses are paid for our wounded warriors, all 4 days of each event. Your area is one of 8 we are cycling this year. Can you help us get the word out, and perhaps add our email addresses to your list of contacts. We are beginning and ending at “The Fat Frog” in Chesapeake, Walt is our adaptive bike tech whenever we cycle in the area. Our other plans for this event, are the bike fitting day, cycling NOB and Little Creek, 30 miles in Chesapeake, and on Saturday we are in the NATO Nations Parade. Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide us. Debra 910-278-4612

  • Please change our website and email addresses to teamracine@thewarriorride.org, and our web-site to Thewarriorride.org. Our specific needs for this event are hotel rooms for 30 people for 4 days, 3 meals per day, and of course the cost of the bicycles (we have 35), jerseys, gloves, helmets and shorts. Any way any of your membership can help us would be greatly appreciated. We are in the Va. Beach area at least every other month, and would be proud to come and make a presentation to anyone interested.
    Thanks again, Debra Racine
