Thunderhead Alliance Seeks Research Assistant

Thunderhead Alliance is the national coalition of bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations. We are the only national organization with a mission to create, strengthen and unite state and local bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations. We have 135 member organizations in 49 states and in Canada.

We are seeking a Research Assistant to work with the Alliance’s National Bicycling and Walking Benchmarking Project. The Research Assistant will report to the Benchmarking Project Coordinator. The Benchmarking Project collects and analyzes data from all 50 states and the top 50 cities (by population) on bicycling, walking, and health. We are looking for someone who can dedicate 10- 20 hours a week from October 2008 through September 2009. Funding for this position ends in September 2009, but there may be potential to continue contract if additional funding is secured.

Responsibilities

  • Outreach to government officials and advocates to complete Benchmarking surveys (includes e-mail and phone outreach during normal business hours)
  • Input data received from Benchmarking surveys
  • Research national data sets and enter data into our system
  • Perform calculations and analysis with Benchmarking data
  • Coordinate with Benchmarking Project Coordinator and Project Team on needed calculations and analysis
  • Make various graphs using Benchmarking data
  • Additional research as needed in support of the project; might include research into new data sets, reviewing related reports and studies, researching contacts for sharing report findings, researching new funding opportunities, and other research as needed.
  • Additional outreach as needed in support of the project; might include outreach to survey respondents to clarify answers or seek additional information, outreach to obtain permissions to use photos in report, and other outreach as needed.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to commit to the project for the next year
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently under deadlines
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Previous experience working with data collection and analysis
  • Extensive knowledge of databases and Microsoft Excel
  • Must be able to work from home from own computer and have access to the Internet and Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Solid writing skills is a plus
  • Can-do attitude is required
  • Knowledge of bicycle and pedestrian issues is a plus
  • Experience with GIS a plus
  • Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator and graph design a plus

Hours are flexible, but some daytime business hours may be required for tasks such as phone calls.

  • This is a temporary contract position.
  • Applicant must be willing and able to work from home and must have access to Excel.
  • Pay is $20/hr.
