The Barbara Pinter Memorial Fund

The Virginia Bicycling Federation will use proceeds from the Barbara Pinter Memorial Fund to identify, create, mark and promote long distance cycling routes, so others may experience the same wonders and joys that Barbara loved while taking long tours on her bike.

Barbara Pinter

Barbara Pinter grew up in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and moved to Richmond, Virginia in the mid-eighties, where she worked as a physical therapist at several area hospitals. As a Rehab PT specialist, she took a personal interest in her patients and was loved by many of them.

Barbara was an energetic person who lived to bike, hike and exercise. Always in motion, she led a very active life that included many adventures around the world.

After completing a long ride or walk, it was not unusual to find Barbara engaged in another of her favorite activities– munching on chocolate chip cookies or eating a handful of Hershey’s kisses.

She could be tough on her riding companions! Never one to take the easy way out, at the end of a tiring ride, she would often tell her exhausted companions she didn’t feel quite “complete” and proceed to turn around in order to get a few more miles in.

She never seemed to meet a hill too long or too steep.

In 2004, Barbara rode from Yorktown, Virginia to Florence, Oregon following the TransAmerica Route, fully loaded. She also completed an end-to-end ride of the Natchez Trace in 1999 and the Blue Ridge Parkway in 2008.

Barbara was a caring friend to many, including riders in the Richmond Area Bicycling Association, with whom she rode for many years. Her outgoing personality, charisma, and inherent warmth drew people to her.

Barbara was diagnosed with stomach cancer in May, 2012 and succumbed to the disease on January 27, 2013 after a very courageous battle that she fought with dignity and grace.
