The Bicyclist Safety Act has been signed by the governor, and will take effect July 1.

Stop for Pedestrians — The Final Push — SB644

Please note: “stop for pedestrians in crosswalks” has returned for 2009 as HB 2386, which has an excellent chance of passing. As of Jan. 27 it has cleared committee and is headed for the House floor. Contact your House Delegate now to ask for their support.

The House Transportation Committee docket for tomorrow (1/2 hour after adjournment, which usually means around 2 p.m.) has just been posted, and SB644 is listed.

Now is the time for all constituents of Transportation Committee delegates to call them and ask them to support the “Motorists Must Stop for Pedestrians in Crosswalks” bill, SB644.

Committee members are:

  • May, Chairman (Loudon)
  • Ed Scott (Culpeper)
  • Toscano (Charlottesville)
  • Fralin (Roanoke)
  • Nichols (Woodbridge)
  • Frederick (Woodbridge)
  • Dwight Jones (Richmond)
  • Saxman (Staunton)
  • Loupassi (West end Richmond & Chesterfield)
  • Ebbin (Arlington)
  • Carrico (SW Virginia, along the NC line)
  • Rust (Herndon)
  • BaCote (Newport News)
  • Cosgrove (Chesapeake)
  • Hugo (Centreville)
  • Gear (Hampton)
  • Tata (VA Beach)
  • Marsden (Fairfax)
  • Oder (Newport News)
  • Valentine (Lynchburg)
  • Brink (Arlington)

House Bill 1270, which was identical, passed this committee by a 11-8 vote, with 3 members not present, so the vote obviously will be close, and every one counts. If we can clear this committee I think it will squeak by in the full house. Thanks for everyone’s help. As always, if you need phone numbers, please contact me.

The Virginia General Assembly website also has links to your delegates’ contact information.
