My remarks at last night’s CTB public hearing in Fairfax County are below. Four of the 20 citizen speakers, including Bruce Wright and Fionnuala Quinn of FABB and Rick Holt from Prince William County primarily addressed bicycling issues, most notably the vacant statewide coordinator position, the stalled statewide bicycling policy plan, and the poor maintenance of VDOT shared-use paths. Thanks to those who spoke last night, VDOT should make significant progress on at least those three issues in the coming months.
The CTB will hold two more public hearings in Salem and in Richmond on May 12 and 18, respectively. [continue reading…]

Our 2011 US Bicycle Routes fundraiser has ended, with $330 raised by Team Virginia. Thanks to Mark Blacknell, Matt Camp, Terry Dorn, Arman Esraghi, Daniel Widner, Marshal Lefleor & 3 anonymous donors. Shenandoah Valley City Receives Bronze Award from Bikeleague
The League of American Bicyclists
has announced that Harrisonburg, VA has been added to the list of bike friendly communities across America by honoring the town with a bronze level award.
Carly Sieff of the League staff said, “We were impressed with their efforts and wanted to make sure (everyone) knew of the great work they were doing to promote bicycling..”
This makes Harrisonburg the fifth Virginia community to receive bike friendly awards.
Other bike friendly cities in Virginia include:
- Arlington (Silver);
- Alexandria (Bronze);
- Charlottesville (Bronze);
- Roanoke (Bronze).
According to Thomas Jenkins, Chair of the Harrisonburg Bicycle and Pedestrian Sub Committee, “Over the past 12 months the City of Harrisonburg has made many positive steps to make the “Friendly CIty” become more bicycle friendly. The League of American Bicyclist recent Bronze level award for Harrisonburg demonstrates a commitment from City to become safer for all forms of transportation. The improvements the City has made for cyclist has been through years of cooperation between citizens, Shenandoah Valley Bicycle Coalition and City Staff.”
Congratulations to Harrisonburg and the other communities for their hard work to make their cities more enjoyable for cyclists.
