The Cycling Double Header takes place Memorial Day weekend (May 29-30, 2010), with the Wilderness Road Ride on Saturday, and the Mountains of Misery on Sunday.
The Wilderness Road Ride follows part of the historic Wilderness Road, Daniel Boone’s route through the Appalachians to the Cumberland Gap. Five courses offer something for everyone, with 14, 29, 38, 58, and 78 mile options. All routes start and finish in Radford, at the Dedmon Center and Bisset Park. Each morning, Sam Perry dons a helmet, hops on his bicycle and pedals 4 miles from his home to his job at a software company near Broad Street and Parham road.
“It is an effort on my part to find a safe route,” said Perry, who has been commuting to work by bicycle for eight years, riding as far as 27 miles.
“Part of it is my own health initiative,” he said, “and part of it is having one less car on the road.”

The Virginia LTAP is offering a workshop on “Low Cost Safety Improvements” in Fishersville. The LTAP, or Local Technical Assistance Program, is a federally-funded tecnical assistance and training initiative for local engineers and planners. Anyone may attend these workshops. VBF encourages all bike advocates to attend, and to encourage their local engineers and planners to attend also.
