VBF’s annual Cross-State Ride is on, for May 8-17, 2009. This year’s ride deviates from the TransAmerica route and continues on Rt. 5 to Richmond to join the May 9 Capitol to Capitol ride. (Two events in one!) From Richmond, the group will ride to Ashland on US Bike Route 1. In Ashland, we will rejoin US Bike Route 76.
The Cross-State Ride is a public relations and marketing event to raise awareness of the benefits of bicycle touring in Virginia. You, as riders, will be ambassadors for bicycling in our state. [continue reading…]
Since we were unable to secure a patron to carry a bill to amend the vehicular code from the present passing distance of 24″ to 36″, as a number of states now have, (common responses I get from legislators are, “How many cyclists have been killed or injured while being passed by 24?”, or, “It’s unenforceable since no one has a ruler or yardstick out there anyway”), my #1 priority became the “Motorists to Stop for Pedestrians in Crosswalks” bills.

Progress continues on the construction of the Virginia Capital Trail, a 54 mile bike path/ greenway running from Jamestown, VA to Richmond. Construction will soon begin on the section of the trail which passes by Sherwood Forest, historical home of America’s tenth president, John Tyler.
A public hearing to review the Sherwood Forest section will be held Wednesday, April 1 from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm at the Charles City County Government Building Auditorium, 10900 Courthouse Road, Charles City, VA.
Come and see the preliminary plans for the next segment of the trail. The Trail is scheduled to be completed in 2013.
East Coast Greenway is a project to create a nearly 3000-mile (4828 km) urban path linking the major cities along the Atlantic coast, from Calais, Maine to Key West, Florida for non-motorized human transportation.
