The Richmond Area Bicycling Association (RABA) invites cyclists of all ability levels to participate in the Heart of Virginia Bike Festival. Register for the Bon Secours Richmond Health System Century (101 Miles), Metric Century (62 Miles), Half Metric (31 Miles) or Family Rides (10 Miles).
Presented by RABA and FLARE (Frog Level Amateur Radio Enthusiasts), the event will take place on September 14 at the historic Hanover County Courthouse. All distances are $45 (RABA Members $40). Register before August 31 – the price goes up to $55.
Enjoy the scenic landscapes of Hanover and Caroline Counties, and enjoy refreshment at one of the four fully stocked rest stops. SAG support will be available along with mechanics to assist with flats and bike safety checks. Upon your arrival back at the Hanover Courthouse finish line, Alamo BBQ lunch, live entertainment, and many tired, happy riders await you! Your participation in this event helps support RABA projects such as its “Bikes for Kids” and FLARE to provide emergency communications for some of the area localities!
Walk up registration will be available for $65. Our volunteers work hard to make this one of the most affordable and enjoyable bicycle events in the region. Pick up your packet Friday, September 13 at Carytown Bicycle Co. 3112 W Cary St, Richmond, VA 23221 between 5 pm to 8 pm, or Saturday morning starting at 6:30 am. We hope you will join us!

Ididn’t know where to put this, but I really wanted to share a great article about a ‘bike camp’ and the economics of bike touring in general–great graphics and if you check out comment #5, the Virginia Creeper Trail is mentioned.

I read David Irvine’s comment regarding the Va Creeper Trail,
” …the long-time proprietor Mrs Ginnie Adams, 87, told me that the creation of the 34-mile Virginia Creeper multiuse trail out of the former Virginia & Carolina RR ROW transformed Damascus pulling the town out of decades of economic doldrums. ”
If you know the history of the trail, (see: http://www.vacreepertrail.us/opposition.html), the irony is as thick as butter: many locals did everything possible to stop the Creeper from being built. Fast forward to today, and as stated, it is the lifeblood of the community. (Go to the Damascus website – http://www.damascus.org – and they call themselves, “Trailtown USA”.)
As most of us know, trails are often economic engines that are keeping many small towns alive and thriving.
Could you give the time it starts? And does the 6:30 a.m. for the packet pick-up refer to the courthouse or Cary Street bike shop.
would like to know if you could use volunteers for the upcoming event. would need to know the number of volunteers, date and time and what kind of task will be handled.
