Thunderhead Alliance for Biking and Walking is the national coalition of state and local organizations working together to promote bicycling and walking in North American communities. We bring leaders together to help them grow their organizations and become more effective by sharing best practices and innovations. The Alliance’s mission is to create, strengthen, and unite state and local bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations.

Job Description

The Thunderhead Alliance for Biking and Walking is looking for an experienced grassroots organizer to manage a new program working directly with state and local bicycle and pedestrian advocacy organizations across North America. Based out of the Alliance’s office in Washington DC, the job will involve working closely with staff of the League of American Bicyclists and will require regular travel. Under the supervision of the Alliance President, the Grassroots and Training Coordinator will coordinate multiple components to the Alliance’s new State and Local Investment Program (to supercharge bicycle and pedestrian organizations across North America). Specifically the Grassroots and Training Organizer will:

  • Lead trainings on campaign organizing, membership development, and organizational development for state and local advocacy organizations across North America including training development, planning, facilitation, and logistics
  • Serve as manager of a new grant program to grow and assist state and local organizations
  • Coordinate and lead development of database tools
  • Assist and coach advocacy organization leaders
  • Work closely with League of American Bicyclists Staff on coordinated programs
  • Partner with other staff on the Alliance’s programs and outreach
  • Engage member and partner organizations to assist with programs
  • Perform other administrative duties as needed including mailing, event planning, database entry, etc.

Qualifications

  • A strong interest in bicycle and pedestrian advocacy and organizational development
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Experience as an organizer, leader and trainer in transportation, land use policy, or a grassroots organization
  • Excellent interpersonal, presentation, and organizational skills
  • Superb listening and assessment skills
  • Strong oral and writing skills
  • Good coaching, facilitation, empowerment, and motivational skills
  • Self motivated and excellent team player
  • Ability to balance multiple priorities and deadlines with positive attitude
  • Vision for the whole while attending to details
  • Computer literacy with both Apple and PC
  • Database experience or expertise a plus
