The Bicyclist Safety Act has been signed by the governor, and will take effect July 1.

With the 2011 Session of the Virginia General Assembly in high gear, the VBF met with cyclists across the state to discuss legislation effecting cyclists and pedestrians.  Based on these discussions, the VBF will take the following positions on introduced legislation:

  • HB 1683 will be heard in House Transportation Subcommittee #2 shortly after 7:00 AM on Wednesday, January 19. The Subcommittee #2 members are delegates Carrico (Chairman), Oder, Garrett, Cox, J.A., Cleaveland, Ward, Carr. This bill will die in subcommittee unless a majority of the member delegates present vote to report HB 1683 to the full Transportation Committee.

    If your delegate is listed above, please call or email his or her office TODAY (January 18) to ask them to support this bill in subcommittee.

    Before 7 AM tomorrow, state delegates and senators can still endorse HB 1683 by signing on as a co-patron. Please call or email your legislators today with that request.

  • I assume the opposition to the “hunting on Sundays” bill is related to biking-in-woods safety concerns? Or is there something else I’m missing?

  • @Matt – yes. Let’s be clear that we’re not taking anything away from hunters. They already have the other six days of the week to do their thing. Everyone else should be able to keep their one a day a week to enjoy the woods without worrying about getting shot.
