The Bicyclist Safety Act has been signed by the governor, and will take effect July 1.

2009 Cross-State Ride

Please see our itinerary below, and schedule a ride-along ride for your club as we pass through your area. Or just show up yourself! Feel free to join us for as much as you can. For up to the minute info on our whereabouts, call Barbara Duerk at (540)580-1621.

VBF’s annual Cross-State Ride is on, for May 8-17, 2009. This year’s ride deviates from the TransAmerica route and continues on Rt. 5 to Richmond to join the May 9 Capitol to Capitol ride. (Two events in one!) From Richmond, the group will ride to Ashland on US Bike Route 1. In Ashland, we will rejoin US Bike Route 76.

The Cross-State Ride is a public relations and marketing event to raise awareness of the benefits of bicycle touring in Virginia.  You, as riders, will be ambassadors for bicycling in our state.

2009 On the Softer Side

The 2009 Cross State ride is “slightly supported”. Accommodations are hotels, B&B and a Retreat Center. All have beds, towels, and showers. Your luggage (1 piece) will be transported. Note: Camping is again planned for 2010.

New Bike 76 Passports, Certificates, and Pins

Cross State riders will be able to purchase a pin recognizing their accomplishment of bicycling the 570 miles of US Bike Route 76, the Adventure Cycling 76 route, through Virginia.  Riders will carry a passport to be stamped/signed at guestbook/registry locations along the way.  Download your passport, get signatures/stamps, and sign registration books to qualify for a VBF certificate of recognition.  After completing your trip, download and send in your application for a pin.

The 2009 Cross State Ride will be the inauguration of this new program for all Bike 76 riders.

Cost & Other Information

Local cyclists are encouraged to ride free with the group when we are in your area.

Riders agree to stay at designated lodging and pay for personal lodging and food. All through riders must be members of the Virginia Bicycling Federation, must purchase and wear our VBF safety vest, and agree to pay their portion of the shared cost of the SAG vehicle. Previous Cross-State Ride group costs have been between $100 and $200.

A $100 deposit is needed to reserve your space. Checks should be made payable to VBF and mailed to VBF c/o Barbara Duerk, 2607 Rosalind Ave., S.W. Roanoke, VA 24014, 540-343-1616; barbgary@cox.net

One piece of luggage, the size allowed on airlines, will be transported for each person. Riders will be responsibility for their own transportation to Yorktown and from Kentucky. Please try to arrange carpools.

The daily route will close at 5:00pm each day. All riders still on the route will be picked up and taken to the scheduled destination. Dinner is planned for 6pm. Route de-briefings and next day route highlights will be discussed at dinner.
