The Bicyclist Safety Act has been signed by the governor, and will take effect July 1.

2008 Cross-State Ride and Governor’s ‘Bike Month’ Proclamation Ride

VBF hosts the Cross-State Ride every year to promote US Bike Routes 1 and 76, to promote bicycling-oriented tourism, and to raise awareness of bicycling in Virginia — for transportation, recreation, and exercise.

The 2008 event will double as the Governor’s Bike Month Proclamation Ride. We’ll start in Yorktown and ride US Bike Route 76 to Richmond, where we’ll receive the Governor’s Bike Month Proclamation. Then we’ll ride on to Roanoke, to present the Proclamation to Roanoke city officials. (Roanoke has been proactive in working toward the Bicycle Friendly Community designation.)

This year’s ride will be a 6 day tour, with hotel, hostel, or “indoor camping” accommodations, and meals in restaurants. Full SAG support is planned, with luggage carried by SAG vehicles. Riders may join for any portion of the tour. Bike clubs and local riders are encouraged to ride along with the tour as it passes through their area. Some riders may continue past Roanoke to the tour’s traditional end at Breaks Interstate Park, where Route 76 crosses the Virginia-Kentucky border.

Anyone interested in joining the tour, or just riding along for part of it, should contact the ride leaders:

As of April 19, 7 riders have signed on for the whole tour.
